Created in 1997 by Interplay Entertainment, this is the first game in the Fallout series. It is a turn based game. The whole series is very weird. Around the 50s or 60s, the world focused on making new technology, and stopped making new styles of clothes, houses, or music. Because this timeline made advanced machines earlier than real life, their resources started to run out before ours did. Many countries fought over oil and uranium starting in 2052, and it was called the Resource Wars. However, the main fighting was between the United States and China, because they were the counties that produced the most for the world. China took over Alaska in 2066, and the United States annexed Canada about 10 years later to gain more soldiers for the war. Eventually, the US took back Alaska a year later in 2077. In the story of Fallout, nobody knows how which side started it, but on October 23, 2077, the Great War began. Either the US or China launched multiple nuclear bombs at the other country, and the other country fired multiple nuclear bombs back at them. Within 2-3 hours, every major city in the world was destroyed from blasts or radiation. However, before the war, the government commissioned a company named Vault-Tec to create “vaults”. These were built underground, and kept people safe from the nukes. However, many had secret “social experiments”. For example, one vault kept its blast door cracked open just a tiny bit, and most of the inhabitants of that vault died of radiation or became ghouls. Ghouls are people who were exposed to lots of radiation, but somehow didn’t die. Some ghouls act like normal human beings, and some are just plain zombies. However, some experiments weren’t bad, so many people made families and generations passed in the vault. This game takes place in 2161, which is 84 years after the nukes were set off. The main character lives in Vault 81, and the chip in the vault responsible for keeping the water supply safe fails. The overseer (mayor) of the vault tells the character to find a replacement while fighting off super mutants, which were humans who tried to evolve themselves using a very toxic mixture, and became mindless monsters bent on world domination.
